Colour, size, placement, execution of your signature... it all matters as much as everything else on the painting.

Any mark you make on the canvas (or surface) is part of the piece of work you are creating. Your signature should be seen in this light.

The guiding rule is that your mark should complement the painting and not distract the eye in anyway.

But there's no need to fret over signing your painting, a unique signature is something that comes with time.
